At the Milagros Cruz Continuing Education School in Tenares,
our sisters offer classes for mothers and young women with limited economic resources who want to learn a profession. This gives them a chance to use their respective talents to support their families. At the same time, they grow into the productive labor market and can improve their lives and those of their families.
The center has a teaching staff sponsored by the Ministry of Education. Courses are offered for beginners and advanced students in sewing, baking (also for decorating pastries and the like), cooking, home decoration, beauty care (e.g. complementary make-up, acrylic nails and jewellery).
Over the years, many of these mothers and young women have subsequently been able to open a small shop, which they can now use to support their families.
We continue to face great challenges in order to give as many young people as possible a better chance in life. The very simple school developed from a meeting room and is much too small for the 161 students we have this year. Our most urgent concern at the moment is to enlarge the kitchen so that this area can function better. The other classes are still taking turns in the same room until we can build a separate classroom for each area in the future.
